Alternative country

With a combination of folk, country, blues, pop and a little bit of reggae Bob Lyna gives performances for all tastes to enjoy.
“Those words can also be used to describe country with an edge or alternative country,” said Lyna, of Auburn, who will perform at Coffee 'N Cream in Moravia Saturday.

“I play songs for two reasons: because I like them, and I don't want to be just classic rock or classic folk.”

Lyna sings and plays acoustic guitar along with the harmonica. His extensive repertoire includes some original songs but mainly focuses on a variety of covers.

“I'm trying to get hip,” joked Lyna as he explained how he has recently learned a Norah Jones' song.

Lyna's performance Saturday will be at the tail end of the shop's week-long one-year anniversary celebration, and he is thrilled to be on the schedule.

“Sarah is a totally cool lady who created an atmosphere you want to be in,” he said speaking of Coffee 'N Cream's owner Sarah Crossgrove. “The coffee is good; the food is great; and the ice cream is awesome.”

And Crossgrove couldn't be more pleased to bring Lyna, who has played at the coffee house on several occasions, back to entertain visitors.

“Every time we have him here we are full,” said Crossgrove. “Sometimes he brings friends along to play with him.”

The friends include Rich Curry who often accompanies Lyna on a wash tub bass which consists of an old wash tub with handles, a string and a stick that magically transforms into a one string mountain instrument with an impressive sound that can rival any electric bass.

“Rich is a very gifted musician,” Lyna said.

Lyna and Curry also play with drummer, Ron Howard Jr., in the band Nuclear Ukulele.

“We play music that people can very much relate to ... well-known songs with our own seal added but not altered so much that they lose their own original beauty,” Lyna said.

After working as a confidential prevention educator in Auburn for 22 years, Lyna took his music from just being “on the side” to full-time status in 2001. He travels between Auburn, Syracuse, Oswego, Ithaca and Rochester, frequently playing at coffee houses, schools and for senior citizens in various community groups. In addition, once a year Lyna plays for residents at Tully Hill Alcohol & Drug Treatment Center.
