Chocolate, candy sweethearts and roses remain classic favorites this Valentine's Day.
A local library is providing you with enough Johanna Lindsey and Mary Jo Putney to fill up your bookshelves until next Valentine's Day.

In honor of the day of chocolates, love and all things sweet, the Jordan Bramley Library is hosting a romance book sale 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

You'll be able to lose yourself in a steamy, saucy tale for just 25 cents (paperback) or 50 cents (hardcover). All books are used.

Library director Linda Byrnes said that used or duplicate copies of romance novels usually sell well at the library's bookstore, but she's not quite sure why.

“They sell out of here by the bag-full and it amazes me,” Byrnes said. She guessed that it could have something to do with the weather; when it's cold outside, people seem to want to curl up with some hot romance.

This a trial run for the fund-raiser, which also includes a bake sale of heart-shaped cookies and other holiday-themed treats.

The library is located at 15 Mechanic St. in Jordan. Call 689-3296 for more information.

Jordan isn't the only place to get into the Valentine's Day spirit. Several other businesses are putting their own twist on the holiday:

- Lucinda Ryan, front desk supervisor at the Sherwood Inn, has seen her fair share of proposals at the restaurant, everything from rings in champagne glasses to a hired violinist.

The inn's lakeside setting, dimmed lights and calming fireplace make it the ideal place to pop the question, Ryan said, and many people also get engaged on the benches or gazebo out front.

To go along with its romantic history, the Sherwood Inn is hosting a Jazz Sweethearts Brunch and Valentine's dinner.

The a la carte dinner is available Saturday through Tuesday; Saturday guests will be able to listen to the sounds of acoustic guitarist Loren Barrigar.

And on Sunday, patrons can enjoy a brunch buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., all while being serenaded by the jazz of Barrigar and Joe Whiting.

So will the inn be the scene of any Valentine's proposals this year?

“I would not be surprised at all,” Ryan said.

The Sherwood Inn is located at 26 W. Genesee St., Skaneateles. Call 685-3405 for more information.

- Tyburn Academy's Valentine's Day Cabaret Dinner was so successful last year that organizers haven't changed much about the show, which plays tonight at the Springside Inn.

The show, titled “Music of the Heart,” features local performers performing such romance-related favorites as “My Funny Valentine,” “When Somebody Loves You,” and “Make Believe.” In addition to door prizes, there will be a Valentine's quiz, and the table with the most correct answers will win goodies.

Tickets are $30 (including a 6 p.m. dinner), and reservations are required. Call 252-2937 for more information.

- The Absolute Dance Company will present “A Tribute To Love” 7 p.m. Saturday, at its downtown Auburn studio. The free performance will feature a variety of dances all accompanied by music of love.
