SYRACUSE - A malfunctioning heating system at a hairstyling school sent 38 people to the hospital Friday for treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning, police said.
Authorities used a city bus to drive 23 patients with minor symptoms to University Hospital, police said. Ambulances were used to transport 15 patients who showed more serious symptoms, police said.

None of the patients suffered any serious harm, police said.

The incident occurred about 11 a.m. at the Phillips Hairstyling Institute.

When the people inside the building began to feel ill at the same time, they suspected a problem and called 911, said Deputy Fire Chief George Hart. Emergency crews are using fans to clear the dangerous fumes out of the building.
