Of the many classes available at Cayuga Community College, from early childhood programs to nursing certification and even Shakespeare and foreign language, one course stands out from all the others. Steeped in tradition Pete Petrosino's Judo class sets itself apart as a one-of-a-kind experience.
Having taken the class for three semesters and now a fourth one to begin, I have seen this tradition first-hand. Jigoro Kano removed the deadly strikes and bone wrenching joint locks of the ju-jitsu until the throws and easier-on-the-body joint locks were all that remained. Kano then polished those techniques into a sport that can be used in everyday life. Sensei Pete presents these techniques in a way that makes them easy to understand and he allows each student time to grow at their own pace.
Not all students achieve a colored belt at the end of the semester, but all gain a greater understanding of their own bodies and, as Sensei Pete always says, many come back years later to tell how that little bit of Judo saved their lives. If you've ever fallen on the ice during the Auburn winters you know what I mean. It hurts! A few classes with Sensei Pete, and you'll be able to fall with a greater chance of being able to walk afterwards.
Any student looking for greater self esteem and self confidence need look no further than the Judo class offered at CCC. They offer day classes that fit into most schedules and night non-credit classes that fit into the rest, there is a class for everyone. The night credit classes are open to anyone and are open now through the spring semester from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are on average four or five black belts on hand during the night classes and all draw their strength from Sensei Pete. The night classes are open for anyone 16 or older and there is no experience required. Registration will continue for a few weeks so if you are interested, contact Pete Petrosino at 255-1464 for details, and I'll see you on the mat.
