Rovelli rolls 300, not enough to stay
WEEDSPORT - Twelve 700 matches, a 300 game, a 299 game, and a 237 triplicate series were shot by 10 different bowlers while one former champion and runner-up remained unbeaten in the winners' bracket as the field was trimmed down to 24 bowlers in the 2006 Men's Citizen Masters at Rainbow Lanes in Weedsport.
In the losers' bracket matches at 11 a.m., John Rovelli and 2004 runner-up and this year's high qualifier Brian Storrs were locked up in the highest scoring match of the day. Rovelli started out with a 300 game to Storrs' 245 for a 55-pin lead. Storrs won the second and third games 226-224 and 258-218, but it was not enough to overcome the first-game deficit as Rovelli won a thriller, 744-727.
Paul Samasuck (1977 champion) fired games of 244-235-257 for 736 to defeat Chris Plis' 580. Brandon Slayton rolled games of 256-244-226 for 726 to eliminate Bill Gentilcore who rolled a 604. Mike Walker II shot a 237 triplicate for 711 to beat Jerry Marciniec (599).
