WEEDSPORT - Three bowlers broke the 700 mark on the first day of match play in the 2006 Men's Citizen Masters at Rainbow Lanes in Weedsport.

Steve Suslik and John Walters Jr. locked up in a high-scoring battle that highlighted the 11 a.m. squad on Saturday. Suslik fired games of 247-247-246 for a 740 to get by Walters Jr., who had games of 245-258-215 for 718. Suslik trailed Walters Jr. after two games by nine pins 503-494, but rallied to win the third game by 31 pins to pull out the victory.
Ted Phillips rolled games of 246-269-214 for 729 to hand 2004 Champion Mike Ryan his first loss with 632. Defending champion Bill Kuszaj defeated 2002 champion Rick Lambrecht Jr. ,699-623, in a match-up of champions.
Bill Holmes stopped Bubby Triska in a high-scoring 690-669 match, even though
Triska won the third game 245-215. Holmes led by 51 pins after two games, 475-424.
Mike Maltese threw a big 697 to beat J.T. Locastro's 611 and 1998 runner-up Don Paquette got by Herb Dyson 663-631 in a close match.
Don Johnson defeated 1977 champion Paul Samasuck (662-570), Bill Canino stopped Neale Baran (658-617), Gary Fedigan got by Rick Chalupnicki (625-608), and Steve Gardner won big over James Clark (659-456).
Greg Walczyk trailed Chris Plis by 14 pins after two games, 397-383, but won the third game 205-182 to pull out a nine-pin victory 588-579. Dave Dec held off Tom Caci II by five pins, 606-601, when Dec was leading after two 410-374. Caci won the third 227-196.
Steve Walawender bested Carl Harvey II, 635-616.
Jason Horbal trailed Sean Hoey by two pins after two games, 387-385 and won the third 225-195 for a 610-582 victory. Jeff Matty defeated Bill Stanley, 600-569, and Geary Gioia stopped Jamie Cordway, 589-545, despite Cordway's 212-134 victory in the third game.
On the 2 p.m. squad, high qualifier and 2004 runner-up Brian Storrs defeated 1997 runner-up Paul Roche, 690-521.
The 1994 runner-up, Tom Knapp, won big over Todd Wilcox, 677-576, John Rovelli bested 1993 runner-up Mike Crowley 687-620, and Mel Tweed Jr. stopped Jeff Lumb, 645-609.
The 2001 champion, Lou Tabone, stopped Carman McGiff (636-601), Bill Gentilcore beat Jim Young (571-555), and Brandon Slaytn defeated Ed Hall (596-555).
Mike Wilczek, the 1988 champion, held off Jim Casbarro by nine pins, 594-585, when Casbarro won the third game 234-188 after Wilczek had a 55-pin lead after two games.
Dan Johnson led Jerry Locastro by 25 pins, 451-426, after two games and held on for a nine-pin victory 672-663 in a high-scoring match when Locastro won the third game 237-221.
The 1995 runner-up Phil Perkins won big over Darrin Emperato (692-609), while 1986 champion Pete Bommersbach bested Angelo Tozzi (677-639) in a match Bommersbach led by only four pins after two games.
Tim Hlywa defeated 1984 runner-up Bill Sidor, 576-556, despite Sidor's 204-166 victory in the third game after Hlywa took a 58-pin lead after two games.
