Members are the greatest gift of all

Right before Christmas, it is always nice to think of the many gifts we have in our lives. At the Auburn YMCA-WEIU, one often thinks of gym, basketball, swimming or working out as what is happening around the building. But there is so much more than a building.
The programs offered are not just physical and aquatic, but social and volunteer.

We range in serving the young babies the older adults. In between are our many members who play basketball, volleyball, racquetball, dodgeball, swimming, child care, Y-pals, and preschool or respite programs. We also have several volunteers, including our Board of Directors who put in long hours at the Y.

Though the YMCA is known for its programs, the best gifts are our members. It is wonderful to see them support each other. For example, some of our members and staff recently formed a committee to help another member by using their talents to help fix up a house, at no expense to the family.

There are many member stories we often share. A group of dedicated exercisers comes in every morning around 7 to work out and see how their other friends are doing and support them. Another group comes in for calisthenics. Parents help coach our Super Sports programs to spend extra time with their children. A 2-year-old comes with his parents to handicapped swim each morning and has skillfully wrapped most of the members around his little finger.

Our members are more than just members - many of them are friends. One of the best things about the Y is the number of people who care for each other. There are wonderful stories of people who exercise at the same time and also support each other. There are some who have organized a separate exercise program for others they thought needed it. There is also a group of people that taught another member how to swim.

It is wonderful also that families spend time here together, especially at Christmas. There are lots of people who come home for the holidays and come to the Y. A lot of young people on vacation also spend a lot of their time here playing basketball or just hanging around.

Behind the scenes, there are a lot of people who help make sure the YMCA runs efficiently. Oftentimes, people are not aware of how hard our maintenance staff works, Plus, our office staff helps out tremendously with printing flyers, keeping our computer information up to date.

The YMCA is truly a gift to the community. We welcome everyone here, but more importantly, we become like family. Parents are comfortable dropping off their children here knowing they will be safe.

The YMCA knows its members and cares about them. We constantly try to update facilities and programs for our members. We enjoy hearing their stories and getting to know them.

The blessings of the YMCA lie not only in programs and members but also in the staff. All the staff members are dedicated and caring, friendly and fun.

May everyone be blessed this holiday season
