Although many people are aware of our fitness programs at the Auburn YMCA, they may not be aware that we offer karate classes throughout the week.
All of our self defense, martial arts and kickboxing are under the direction of Sensei Chris Hundley.
They are taught by him or other trained New World Martial Arts certified instructors. Classes are for both adults and youth, 13-and-under.
Both of our kickboxing classes (youth and adult) are offered on Monday and Friday evenings. Youth classes are Mondays from 5:15 to 5:45 and Fridays from 4:30 to 5.
Adult classes are Mondays 6 to 7 p.m and Fridays 5 to 6 p.m. The kickboxing classes involve kicking, punching heavy bags, agility exercises and having fun.
Our youth karate classes are offered on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5 to 7 pm. This class is open to children ages 6 to 12. It is designed to teach self defense and martial arts skills.
For our adults, classes run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, also from 5 to 7 p.m. so that parent and child can work out together.
This class focuses on self defense and martial arts but also integrates improving fitness levels, self confidence, weight management and self discipline.
It is great fun and a wonderful multigenerational activity.
For more information or to register for these classes, please contact the YMCA membership desk at 253-5304.
The Auburn YMCA has been collaborating with Sean McLeod, NYIDE director and master dance teacher, to offer some special classes for our members.
Over the holiday breaks, McLeod will teach exercise and movement therapy which is designed for athletes of all levels and abilities.
These workshops are a full body experience designed to take the athlete to the next step.
It is a full-body experience with special emphasis placed on strengthening the core muscles as well as increasing agility and reflex response.
Each workshop consists of stretching and toning through movement. The next workshop will be offered on Tues., Dec. 27 or Thurs., Dec. 29 from 1 to 2 p.m.
It is $5 for members and $10 for non members and would be great for college athletes trying to stay in shape over the break.
For more information or to register, call the YMCA at 253-5304.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and we will see you at the YMCA to work off all the turkey, dressing, gravy and dessert pounds that you put on.
