Belichick's father dies of heart failure
Steve Belichick, the father of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, died Saturday night of heart failure. He was 86.

“I coached this game with a heavy heart,” Bill Belichick said after Sunday's 24-17 win over the New Orleans Saints. “My dad passed away. I found out about it the middle of last night.”

The Patriots' coach learned his meticulous game preparation by watching his father, an assistant coach at Navy for 33 years.

“Obviously, he had a tremendous influence on my life personally, and particularly in the football aspect,” Bill Belichick said. “It was great to be able to share the tremendous memories with him and some of our recent successes.”

Giants join 600 club; Harrison fastest to 900

The Giants became the third NFL team in history with 600 victories, behind Chicago (667) and Green Bay (638), after a 27-17 win over Philadelphia.

Giants punter Jeff Feagles tied the NFL record for consecutive games played when he appeared in his 282nd straight. Feagles tied the record set by former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Jim Marshall, who played from 1960-79, when he punted after the Giants' first possession in the first quarter.

Colts WR Marvin Harrison reached 900 career catches faster than anyone in NFL history. He reached the mark with his second catch against the Bengals, a 3-yard loss on a screen late in the second quarter with the Colts already up 28-17. Jerry Rice reached the milestone in 168 games, previously the fastest to get there. Harrison made it in his 149th game. Only five other receivers -- Rice, Cris Carter, Tim Brown, Andre Reed and Art Monk -- have caught 900 passes.

Injuries

Antonio Gates, the Chargers' All-Pro tight end, sprained his right foot at the end of a 21-yard reception against Buffalo when he was tripped up by Angelo Crowell and then had safety Lawyer Milloy land on him. Gates remained on the ground for a few minutes before walking off the field. He tried to test the foot on the sideline, but immediately sat on the bench. He was carted off to the locker room and didn't return. ... CB Lito Sheppard, Eagles, sustained a high left ankle sprain in a loss to the New York Giants. ... LB Zach Thomas, Dolphins, separated his right shoulder late in the first half at Cleveland, leaving Miami without its leading tackler. Thomas will undergo an MRI on Monday.
