SENNETT - For weeks the residents of the Cayuga County Nursing Home have been busily creating fun Christmas and winter theme crafts.
Now their work is in the hands of others who liked the creations enough to buy them.

Items such as hand-painted window panes, sleds and jewelry were for sale at the annual craft bazaar, held at the nursing home Saturday afternoon.

“The money that is raised will be put into a special projects fund,” said Jessie Penird, the nursing homes activities director. “The money is used for various things throughout the year.”

Penird said money raised at last year's event was used to donate $50 to the Asian tsunami relief effort. Funds also went to the American Association for Homes of the Aging, which will help to benefit nursing homes affected by hurricane Katrina.

The jobs of the resident chair people, Carol Wellauer and Franny Demyan, was to organize the resident craft ideas and to involve other residents in the process.

The residents made hand-sewn stuffed animals, aprons and pillows, among many other items that were up for sale.

Even the stuffing for the projects were cut and shredded from a foam slab by the residents themselves.

There was even a special table of used items that the residents affectionately dubbed the “Junk to you is treasure to us” table.

And there was also something for hungry stomachs.

Tables of baked goods and foods such as homemade chili and hot dogs were created by the residents themselves.

But the bazaar also had outside vendors, who are asked to help with the event.

The outside vendors chosen are ones who work regularly with the nursing home and return each year for the craft bazaar.

A portion of the proceeds from the outside vendor tables sales will be donated to the residents' special projects fund.

“I bought myself a wall hanging to hang in the rec room of my home, as well as the cutest pot holders,” said shopper Jerry Hogan. “There are just so many cute things made by the residents themselves.”
