Hits and Misses

HIT: To the Cayuga County Soil and Water District's project to reduce erosion along the Owasco Inlet, which is nearing completion after more than two years of work.
The stabilization of stream banks is important for lake quality, and it allows property owners to keep their land instead of seeing it washed away in huge chunks every year. But the real genius of this project is its use of fluvial geomorphology, which uses information on the shape and flow of the water body to determine how to best incorporate erosion prevention measures.

The result is a more effective project, and one that allows for the integration of vegetation on the newly stabilized banks. In a few years, the banks will be stable, but we will never know that people and machines had made it possible.

MISS: To Gov. George Pataki, who continues to spend way too much time worrying about his next job.

The governor returned this week from a trip to Puerto Rico. The Associated Press reported that Pataki has been out-of-state 23 of the past 65 days, making trips to Iowa, Illinois, California and New Hampshire. He's also been to China, Russia and Finland. When he made his future plans known a few months ago, we worried that this governor would squander an opportunity to lead this state without the shackles that come with a re-election run. Unfortunately, those worries appear to have been justified.

HIT: To the local political campaigns, for removing most of their political signs. There are a few signs with candidates' names dotting the landscape, but the majority have been removed. That does not always happen - many years cities and towns are littered with rotting signs that campaigns neglected to take down.

This year's crop of candidates not only campaigned in a mostly civilized manner, they also cleaned up after themselves rather nicely.
