WEEDSPORT - Self-described biggest Harry Potter fan ever, 14-year-old Nancy Hunt plans to be one of the first in line for the opening of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” today.

Greg Harris and his cat, V.V., were great entertainment for children attending the Harry Potter party at the Weedsport Library Thursday night.
“Originally I didn't like Harry Potter,” she said. “But then my parents made me read the first book, and I have been hooked since. I have read each book at least twice and seen each movie a lot.”

Being such a great fan of Harry Potter, Hunt, along with fellow junior friends of Weedsport Public Library group members, organized a Harry Potter night at the library Thursday evening in honor of the opening of the new movie.

From edible magic wands made from pretzel rods and frosting, a potion table where guests were busily preparing potions of glue, water and colored dye, to paper origami owls, the evening was a magical night of Harry Potter mania.

Dressed as Harry Potter, himself, Greg Harris, accompanied by his faithful cat, V.V., has always been attracted to fantasy stories. So when Harry Potter books hit the stands, he found himself in fantasy heaven.

“Ron Weasley is my favorite character,” he said. “I like him because he is just so funny.”

Harris and other Potter fans entered the Harry Potter costume contest after being sorted into their respective houses.

The houses - Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw - were selected by the sorting hat, just like in the movie.

“My favorite house has always been Gryffindor,” Hunt said. “But I also like the evil quirkiness of the Slytherin house.”

Yet, children aren't the only fans of the Harry Potter series, nor the only ones who came out for Weedsport's Harry Potter night.

“I am a huge Harry Potter fan,” said Gina C. Poupore, who attended the event with her son Adam, 5. “I read every book.”

Poupore said that her children are just as big fans as she is.

“My daughter, Eva, (11) and I will probably wait about a week or so before we go and see the movie,” Poupore said. “I don't like the crowds on opening weekend. With the PG-13 rating, I don't think that I will be taking Adam to see it, though.”

The PG-13 rating has mixed reviews among children and parents alike. With the rating due to violence and frightening images, some parents said that it won't stop them from allowing their children to see the movie.

Adam said that his favorite part of the Harry Potter movies are when the characters are petrified.

Michael VanSlyke, 11, enjoys the series so much that he has collected a lot of Harry Potter merchandise over the years, such as a Lego set and the Playstation 2 Potter video game.

“The ‘Prisoner of Azkaban' is my favorite movie so far,” he said. “My favorite characters are Harry Potter and Ron (Weasley).”

“I don't know what it is about the story that I like so much,” Hunt said. “It is just different. I enjoy the books more than the movies because I find the books easier to follow and the books provide so much more detail. The books I love because they are my escape from the real world.”
