Auburnian wins piano competition
The International Classical Piano and Composers Competition sponsored by the Chopin Society of the Thousand Islands was held in Cape Vincent this year. The competition consisted of 18 young students, Nicholas Hrynyk, 14, son of Greg and Susan Hrynyk of Auburn, won first place in the composer's competition. The name of the classical composition is “Ala's Valse.”

Hrynyk is a student at Auburn High school and has been playing piano for five years.

Jam session open to students

Aspiring jazz improvisers of all ages are invited to the first Scholastic Jazz Jam of the season at Jazz Central, 441 E. Washington St. in downtown Syracuse, from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.

The sessions are an opportunity for young musicians to learn the ropes of playing in public, backed by professionals and to develop their ability to improvise in the jazz style. Participants are encouraged to perform the tune of their choice with the all-star rhythm section of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, including Rick Montalbano on piano, Darryl Pugh on bass and Larry Luttinger on drums. This trio of dedicated jazz musician-educators provides jazz instruction to a total of six area colleges. Guidelines for first-timers are available by calling 479-JAZZ.

The event draws participants from as young as fourth-grade to avocational adults, young professionals completing music degrees regionally, and the occasional local music educator. Admission for the event is $3 at the door for students and $6 for all others.

KidsART Saturdays at Schweinfurth

The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center will offer Sensational Still Lifes from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 3. Participants can explore the endless possibilities of paint. Working from still-lifes, students will improve their observation skills while learning about color, perspective scale and composition. The instructor is Sue Talbot.

Presented by professional artists, these programs are a part of the ArtWorks series. Workshops are open to ages 7 -12. Pre-registration is required. Cost per class is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

ACT seeks teachers for summer program

ACT is looking for outstanding secondary school teachers to participate in a summer program designed to develop and evaluate ACT's test materials and classroom support materials.

Secondary school science, mathematics and language arts teachers are eligible for the program. Earth/space science teachers and minority teachers are urged to apply.

The six-week program begins June 19 and runs through July 28. Teachers will receive a stipend of $5,500 and round-trip transportation between their homes and Iowa City. ACT will secure and subsidize housing for the visiting teachers. Teachers will be asked to pay approximately $1,050 in rent for the entire stay.

Teachers must submit an application, available at ACT's Web site at www.act.org/path/secondary/visit.html. Teachers will need a current resume and two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with their professional background.
