A Weedsport man was arrested Saturday by the Auburn Police Department on charges he ran over his coworker.
Police said the hit-and-run accident followed the coworkers' bout of drinking and league bowling together Friday morning at Skaneateles' Cedar House Lanes after their overnight shift at Tessy Plastics in Elbridge ended at 7 a.m.
Bert E. Farrell IV, 27, of 3 Cedar Lane, Weedsport, fled the residence of Carl Ward, 38, of 5 Lawton Ave., after a dispute that started in the parking lot of Tinker's Guild on Franklin Street in Auburn and ended with Ward run over in the driveway of his residence.
Ward was taken by Mercy Flight helicopter to SUNY Upstate Medical Center's University Hospital in Syracuse. He was treated and released.
Around 1 p.m. Friday, the men left the bowling alley with a third female coworker for Tinker's Guild. Before they had even entered the bar, they got into a verbal and physical fight in the parking lot, Det. Jeffery Mead said. The reason why they argued is unclear to police beyond “alcohol-fueled tempers,” Mead said. Ward left on foot to his residence, and Farrell followed in his car.
Witnesses gave two different versions of what happened next, Mead said.
In one version, Ward reportedly jumped on the hood of the car, and Farrell drove forward, braked and Ward fell off the car; then Farrell drove over him, backed up again and drove over him again, Mead said.
In the other version, Ward was standing in front of the car, and Farrell accelerated and ran him over, Mead said.
Farrell was found at his residence by Auburn patrol officers around 12:10 p.m. Saturday and was taken into custody.
Residents in the Auburn helped police with the probe.
As she was taking down Halloween decorations Friday afternoon, Lawton Avenue resident Tina Juhl said she ignored the sounds of fighting, until her daughter, Crystal, screamed for her to call the police as she watched Ward get run over from a window.
Farrell left the scene, she said. She wrote down his license plate number, which helped police track down the vehicle.
Farrell has been charged with third-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment.
