There are many laws in this country that are no longer enforced. Many of these strange laws, most people don't even know are laws. I was surprised to read some of the things that someone took the time to make a law for. In my mind, common sense should be your guide on everything you do, but apparently, not everyone shares that opinion. All of the following laws are for New York state.
It is illegal in New York for a blind person to drive an automobile. This is where that common sense thing I was talking about comes in. If I was blind, there is no way I would put myself and the ones around me at such high risk. The only way a law becomes a law is because someone tried it and found out it was bad.
In New York, it is illegal for a woman to wear “body-hugging clothing” on the street. It is also illegal for a man to look at a woman, on the street, “in that way.” If a man is caught staring at a woman in a sexual way, the violator will be forced to wear horse blinders. I can't even imagine the number of police officers New York would need to fully enforce these into laws.
How many of us take our dust mops outside and shake them out? According to a New York state law, it is illegal to shake a dust mop out of a window. The law also states that you may not have a puppet show out of your own window. The punishment for that is 30 days in jail.
Every large city has problems with graffiti. New York thought they found a way of helping with this problem. It is illegal to carry on open can of spray paint in New York. This is yet another law that is not enforced, you can tell this by looking at the side of any train.
Most children like playing with balls outside. The next time your children are outside playing and decide to start throwing the balls at each other, tell them it is illegal. You won't be lying to them. It is illegal to throw a ball at someone's head for fun. If your child is caught throwing that ball, be careful how you punish them. It is illegal in New York for children to pick up or collect cigarette and cigar butts.
Facts show that more and more people are drinking soda but if laws were enforced, they wouldn't be. To transport carbonated beverages in New York you must have a permit.
Hanging clothes on the line outside is a good way of saving money on electricity and it doesn't heat your house up in the summer time. If laws were enforced, you would have to have a license before you hung your clothes out.
There are even laws pertaining to food that are no longer enforced. I'm not sure how a police officer would go about capturing violators on some of these laws. A person may not walk around on Sunday with an ice cream cone in his/her pocket. Spaghetti cannot be sucked strand by strand without a law being broken. During a concert, it is illegal to eat peanuts while walking backwards on the sidewalk. None of these laws make sense to me, but they are all still laws.
