The Lions Club can be found in 178 countries and they all share the some motto: We Serve. The club's main goal is to serve its community and the people that live in it. A great deal of focus is put on helping people with their sight and hearing impairments.
Made up of roughly 31 members, the Union Springs Lion Club is busy serving its community in many helpful ways. It is looking for members who are willing to work for the betterment of their community. The club is looking for those that can take satisfaction in helping others. Other than that, you must be at least 18 years old to join.
The Lions Club is involved in not only raising money for its community, but they also give back to the community. A few of the activities it is involved with are Frontenac Fun Day's, community band, Eastern Star, Warren Lodge, Camp Gregory, St. Michael's Church, historical society, Scat Van, TUCC Women's Group, High Angle Rescue Squad, Union Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Booster Club. Just this past year, the Lions Club has raised $17,255.01 for the community. It also works with groups and sponsors many chicken barbecues a year, 15 this past year. The club averages around $684 for each barbecue. The Lions Club does not keep a share of the money. Every cent goes toward the activities and agencies the club supports.
There are several other groups that the Lions Club helps out. This past year, it gave money out for scholarships and other groups. To name a few: $500 went to USA Scholarship, $500 to Lions Scholarship, $500 to help pay for needed eye glasses, $500 to Finger Lakes Hearing, $200 to Empire Speech and Hearing, $200 for canine helpers, $200 went to Batavia School and $100 went to US Soccer Club. Once a year it holds a pancake breakfast to raise money for the Dr. Norman Woodford Scholarship. Joining this group gives a person a great way of meeting the wonderful people that live in the community and take part in the above groups.
September through June, the Lions Club holds meetings every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. There is a membership fee of $50 a year, which goes toward any administrative costs. What better way to get involved with your community, make a difference and help others in need?
The Lions Club is having an open membership night for all that are interested in getting involved with their community, making a difference for the good and becoming part of a family-like group of great people. On Oct. 25, there is going to be a membership meeting for all that would like to attend. The meeting is open to men and women over the age of 18. The meetings are held at the TUCC (across the street from the bank). K. F. Bakery and Cafe will be serving a catered dinner at 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in becoming a member or just wants more information, should contact Warren at 889-5061.
