WEEDSPORT - Baldwinsville field hockey coach Tina Solomon had the plan for the perfect play on Thursday.
Down 1-0 to Weedsport in the second half and time running out, Solomon called the play for the Bees' next corner play if they were awarded one.
Less than two minutes after the time out in which Solomon discussed nine-red with her team, Baldwinsville got a chance to tie it. After a few passes, Stefany McKee had the ball at the top of the key and rifled a shot toward Weedsport goalie Megan Henderson. Henderson (eight saves), got in front of the shot, and it sailed out of bounds, stopping the Bees' best chance for a goal.
“We've scored on it a couple of times, but we've been robbed on it a couple of times,” Solomon said. “Same situation happened with Liverpool. The goalie was just in the right place and it smashed her pads. We have scored on it, and when we score on it, it looks really nice.”
For the games remaining six minutes, the Warriors were able to keep the ball upfield and hung on for the 1-0 victory.
“It was a rocket,” said Henderson, who was back in goal for the first time after missing four games due to a muscle pull.
“When you're a goalie, so much of it is about confidence and your ability to really believe you can stop it,” said Warrior coach Theresa Leonardi, who praised Katie Schlegel for filling in during Henderson's absence. “That first game back you always worry. But I'll tell you, she proved her weight in gold today. Obviously that one rocket shot is what everyone is talking about, but overall she was tremendous today.”
Weedsport scored the winning goal early on, just 44 seconds in, on a penalty corner. Allie Beardsley's cross found Jessica Spingler in perfect position to get the ball past goalie Ellen Guhin (six saves).
“The corner was a thing of beauty, it was exactly the way we draw it up - but they don't often go the way you draw them up,” joked Leonardi. “But today, that's exactly what I wanted them to do. Allie Beardsley made the right move and Jessica Spingler was right where she was supposed to be, ready, and knocked it in.”
The win caps off a six-game streak for the Warriors (13-5) heading into sectionals. Weedsport last lost to Cazenovia, 2-1, on Oct. 5. Since then, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 19-2.
“We've been working hard at practice every day and playing well as a team,” Henderson said. “It shows on the field.” “We've had a lot of ups and downs this season,” Leonardi said. “I'm very proud of the girls. They've worked hard to turn it around and get on a roll and get ready for sectionals.”
Thursday, Weedsport took advantage of a Baldwinsville team that was caught off guard in the opening minute.
After the goal, the Bees rebounded by controlling possession for a good part of the first half. Baldwinsville ended up with a 6-2 advantage in shots, and led 9-3 in penalty corners.
“When you get off the bus you have to be ready to play, and we obviously weren't ready in the first minute,” Solomon said. “After that, I think the girls played great. They fought hard, they never let down, even to the last minute when we were trying to get the ball up the field.”
Weedsport's defense clamped down in the second half, and only gave Baldwinsville two solid opportunities for scoring. Warrior Kelsey Thompson stopped a breakaway just outside the circle, and Henderson stopped McKee on the corner play. Weedsport held Baldwinsville to two shots in the second half.
The win keeps Weedsport on a roll going into sectionals. Section III's seeding meeting takes place Sunday.
