NYS Grange to hold annual meeting
The New York State Grange, the state's oldest rural advocacy organization, is visiting the Holiday Inn in Auburn for its annual meeting today through Tuesday.

Highlights of the convention will include speeches by Ruth Moore, state deputy commissioner of agriculture and markets, and state Sen. David Valesky, the ranking Democratic member of the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture.

The annual meeting gives county Grange representatives from across the state the chance to establish their legislative priorities for the year.

Absolute Dance offering recital

The Absolute Dance Company will present a series of free dance performances set to poetry and instrumental music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Absolute Dance is located at 53 Genesee St., Auburn. RSVP at 253-0067.

ACO to play 20th anniversary concert

The Auburn Chamber Orchestra will open its 20th anniversary season 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.

The concert will be conducted by Ubaldo Valli and played by volunteer members, including several members who have been with the orchestra since its founding.

The concert will be held at Willard Chapel, 17 Nelson St., Auburn.

Top spellers sought for New York bee

The New York Spelling Bee is looking for good spellers in first through eighth grades to compete in its annual bee in Weedsport.

There are separate bees for each grade and all registered contestants will receive a spelling bee booklet for their grade by Dec. 30. The spelling bee will be held on April 29, 2006 and the winner of each grade will receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond. The top five spellers are awarded trophies and all participants will receive a certificate.

Beading workshop to be offered

The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center will offer a beginning beading workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Beading instructor Stephanie Donaldson, from Studio 34 Jewelry Learning Arts Center in Rochester, will demonstrate how to make beaded bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

On Oct. 29, the center will offer a class, taught by Donaldson, on seed beading. Participants will learn the basics of the peyote, herringbone and netting stitches while crafting a bracelet. Supply kits cost $15 and the course costs $25 for non-members and $20 for art center members for both classes. Pre-registration is required
