An Elbridge man was killed when he lost control of his car and crashed on Kester Road in Elbridge Thursday night.
State police in Elbridge said Michael J. Weinerth, 38, of 5021 Limeledge Road, was traveling northbound on Kester Road at a high rate of speed at about 9:45 p.m. when he lost control on a left-hand curve.
Weinerth apparently overcorrected, causing the car to roll over several times.
The car came to rest on the on the west shoulder of the road.
Weinerth was trapped in the wreckage and was later pronounced dead at the scene. He had not been wearing a seat belt, police said.
State police were called at 9:48 p.m. and believe the crash occurred only a short time earlier. They initially investigated the possibility that there may have been others in the car who could not be accounted for. A pair of baby shoes were found in the roadway.
Aided by the searchlight of a helicopter, police searched the area around the crash for additional victims. After speaking with people at Weinerth's residence, police concluded that he had likely been alone in the car.
Police said that speed was definitely a contributing factor in the crash and that alcohol may also have been involved.
A toxicology report will be included in Weinerth's autopsy, police said.
