HIT: To the hard-working child-care providers that serve our area, for the invaluable service they offer so many local families.
The Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes held its annual meeting at the Auburn Holiday Inn on Wednesday.
As part of the program, the council offered a short training workshop for the providers.
It also had a small awards ceremony.
Special congratulations are in order for Sandra Mansell, who received the Sabina Kulakowski Award. Certificate awards went to Mary Lou Haight, Dawn Heusler, Donna Treat, Amy Jordan, Jill Rafferty and Kathy Nedza.
MISS: Has anyone seen the sun lately?
Perhaps we were spoiled by the warm, bright summer this year, but the weather pattern stuck over the northeast since late last week can only be described as depressing.
Let's all hope for a few sunny days in the near future.
HIT: To the approval of the Seymour Library budget proposal.
Voters overwhelmingly gave the OK to a plan that will update computers, allow for better book selection and keep the building warm through the winter months.
Libraries are major assets for their communities. It's good to see Auburn residents support theirs.
MISS: To tour boat operators grumbling over the state's move to reduce maximum occupancies on vessels in the aftermath of the Ethan Allen disaster on Lake George.
The chief complaint: New standards will cut into their profits.
We disagree. People who travel to a destination such as Lake George or Skaneateles will be willing to wait their turn to ride a boat, especially if they know they will be safe.
Instead of immediately complaining about the fiscal impact of safety changes, tour operators should figure out a way to adapt - perhaps shorter tours or lower prices.
