Beware of bogus police support fund
Area residents are being warned of unsolicited faxes from an organization called Policemen's Support Fund.

The fax thanks residents for making a donation and asks them to send either credit card information or a check to help with police officers' funeral expenses, medical hardships and college tuition assistance.

The California-based organization does not include any address information and has a generic police badge icon on it.

”Phone solicitations, fax solicitations, e-mail solicitations: don't respond to them,“ Cayuga County Sheriff Rob Outhouse said. ”Whenever I get them, I throw them away.“

Outhouse noted that legitimate law enforcement support organization like the state Sheriff's Association have identifiable information with their requests for donations.
