AUBURN - The disagreement between Skaneateles schools and the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is like two children who have each other gripped in a headlock, according to Auburn Enlarged City School District Superintendent John Plume.
”The intelligent thing to do in this situation is come to some sort of a compromise,“ Plume said.
At Tuesday night's board of education meeting, Plume announced that the Auburn school district is still interested in working out a compromise regarding the construction of a new educational facility for BOCES.
A series of legal battles broke out between Skaneateles and BOCES when BOCES launched a $43.5 million capital project. Skaneateles officials say they are being asked to pay more than their fair share. Plume is interested in seeing the project move forward and acknowledges Auburn has the biggest stock in the project.
Officials from Skaneateles, BOCES and the other eight component school districts met two weeks ago to try and reach a compromise outside of court. Skaneateles officials said they would drop the lawsuit if the other component districts assumed $864,000 of Skaneateles' costs. A counter proposal of $500,000 was made by the other districts and rejected by Skaneateles.
Every school district under BOCES has agreed to the project except Skaneateles. A public vote was held in November and the project also received community support.
”If we had that campus in this school district it would have been closed,“ Plume said, referring to the current BOCES facility.
”So why is it we are ready to allow this in another facility where we send our children?“
If a compromise is not reached by Oct. 21, arguments will be heard by state Supreme Court Justice Norman W. Seiter Jr. Plume said he hopes both parties can find a resolution before that.
”I really am hoping this reaches a conclusion before it goes to court,“ Plume said. ”That is what is in the best interest of the students.“
In other news:
- The Auburn Enlarged City School District has posted a school start time survey at http://auburn.cnyric.org/~District_Web.
The survey is done in conjunction with a study the district is doing on teenagers and sleep deprivation.
Research done by the National Sleep Foundation shows that teenagers have a biological tendency to go to bed late and sleep more in the morning.
To address this issue, Auburn officials have been considering starting the high school at a later time.
A shorter version of the survey can be found at www.auburn.cnyric.org.
