Two important programs highlight local Scouting in the weeks ahead.
This week, Scouts from throughout the Cayuga County Council will kick-off their annual Trails End Popcorn sale. About two-thirds of the proceeds from the sale stay right here in our community, and help pay for troop equipment, camping trips, outings and community service projects.
In addition, some of the funds are used to support Camp Rotary and other council sponsored programs.
About 25 years ago, the Weaver Popcorn Company in Van Buren, Ind., began a popcorn fund-raising program exclusively for Scouting.
Starting with five Indiana Boy Scout councils in 1980, the program has spread to more than 200 councils across the county. Weaver Popcorn formed a separate company called "#Trails End" that features high-quality gourmet popping corn. Over the years, the product mix has expanded to include nine different products including microwave extreme butter, microwave lite, kettle corn, and a variety of caramel corn products in collectable tins including chocolate caramel crunch, caramel corn with almonds and pecans, and even a chocolate lovers tin with five different chocolate products.
Cayuga County Council Scouts conduct a take-out order sale through mid-October with products delivered the week of Nov. 6.
Community support for this important endeavor helps insure that local Scouts enjoy quality Scouting throughout the year.
One such program is scheduled for Oct. 22 at the Boy Scout Camp Rotary.
Four years ago, an enthusiastic group of volunteer scout leaders and youth camp staff members decided to create a Halloween event for Cub Scout families at Camp Rotary, right here on Owasco Lake.
So began the annual Spook-O-Ree event that attracts hundreds of Cub Scouts and their families each year. Spook-0-Ree IV is being held on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22.
Last year's event included face painting, Halloween bingo, outdoor games, a haunted hike, a costume contest, color photos of each Scout and crafts galore.
This year's event planners include assistant scoutmaster Chuck Seamans, camp program director Cathy Feocco, venture crew advisor Anne Damazyn and venture youth members Mandy Feocco and Katie Damazyn.
We are especially encouraging new Scout families who are joining this month not to miss this Spooktacular event.
It will also provide an opportunity to tour Camp Rotary where your son will be camping next summer. What a great way for a boy to start his Scouting career as he travels together with his family along scoutings trail.
