A header off a corner.
A chip shot over the keeper's head.
A right-footer into the back of the net.
The Cayuga Community College men's soccer team scored on all of those plays and 13 more in a 17-0 blowout win over Adirondack Community College on Sunday afternoon at Auburn High.
The Spartans (13-1) were led by Dean Stanic, who scored six times and assisted on two other goals.
Defenseman Eddie Powell was the only Cayuga player to play the entire game, as coach Godwin Iwelumo emptied his bench after midfielder Liam Ogle scored to put the Spartans ahead 3-0 with 13:25 to play in the first half.
Ogle and Stanic both notched hat tricks in the first half as Cayuga led 7-0 at halftime.
The Spartans were coming off their only loss of the year, a 1-0 game against Hudson Valley on Saturday, that was decided on a penalty kick.
"It was a game we absolutely dominated, but luck just wasn't on our side," Iwelumo said of the loss. "They had two chances and we had eight or nine chances, but we just couldn't put it away."
While Iwelumo admitted Adirondack was overmatched from the outset, he said Saturday's loss gave his team some incentive to pour on the goals.
"Losing 1-0 yesterday didn't help (Adirondack), because when you lose a game one-nil that you think you should have won, you come into the next game and you just take it out on the next team," he said.
By the time the score reached double figures, the Cayuga starters were lobbying to get back into the game for a chance to play new positions.
Defenders entered the game with the hopes of scoring a goal as a forward.
Even though some Spartans re-entered the game out of position, it didn't sit well with Adirondack's players, who were complaining from the bench about the starters playing in a game that was 12-0.
"I was telling our guys that when we signed up to play this game a couple of years ago, they were still a community college team," Adirondack coach Steve Shaw said. "They're clearly not a community college team (anymore)."
Iwelumo said he understood Adirondack's frustration with the lopsided score, but he wouldn't ask his players to run out the clock or miss shots on purpose because he doesn't want them to get into bad habits.
Ogle said the win should give the Spartans some confidence heading into an important game against Herkimer on Thursday. The Generals defeated Cayuga County 3-1 in the playoffs last season and went on to the National Junior College Athletic Association championship game.
"Apparently they're the team to beat, so it should be a good game on Thursday, a good test," Ogle said.
