First, I would like to take the time to send my prayers to the Katrina disaster victims. Sorry to hear the response time from our great American government and its associates was slow.
You know why, because our government did not care. Why? Because many of the people down there are in need. They are lower income. Our government does not care for lower income people; what good are they? Government does not make any money off lower income people, so let them die.
Well, they are human beings, too. Foreign aid to the poor countries get better attention than here in the United States.
God bless the Red Cross; they were there. I wish I could send donations, but all of that is in my gas tank for my old minivan. Thank our great corporate energy companies and the government that supports them. While they are fattening their wallets from profits and great salaries we put there, I, myself and many others, have hit the poverty level. While they are having filet mignon, my family is having peanut butter sandwiches or any cheap pasta dish with water because we cannot afford food or milk/juice, because it went to my gas tank, so I can get to work, so it can fatten more energy corporate wallets; and fuel for my home, to heat it for the bitter winter.
When it cost me - the last two years - $25 to fill up the tank, now it cost $75. That extra $50 could have gone for food. It had cost $225 a month for heat but now costs more than $500. That extra $300 went for utilities and shelter for our home. Now we are facing foreclosure. I cannot mow my lawn because it costs $15 now, instead of $5.
This is the American way of life? Shame on you. Think about it, how would you like to experience this? How do you tell your child, we cannot afford to go to a movie, or new shoes for their feet, or sports equipments, so they play the game, or Girl Scout uniforms, or any other related activity, to keep them occupied and off the streets? This has become very depressing and stressful. Where is your compassion for people who are less fortunate?
For the fun of it, I recently applied for food stamps, I do not qualify, because I have too much income, since they are using last year's guidelines.
I truly feel our government should get its priorities straight. Instead of the millions of dollars being spent, such as aid to foreign countries or in Cayuga County alone for the tourism projects - such as $35 million for the Erie Canal - why not spend some of those millions to relieve some of the energy costs?
Why not cut your profits, salaries and taxes?
Imagine our president taking a decrease in his salary. Or the CEO of an energy company? How about losing some of your hard-earned money? Think about it. Do you think our government cares about the less fortunate in the United States of America? The Katrina disaster just proved it.
God bless the people who did attempt to help. The media certainly did not have a tough time to get on location in New Orleans and other areas for coverage to tell the story.
