Veterans barbecue postponed to spring
The Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument Fund chicken barbecue and music benefit originally scheduled for Oct. 8 has been postponed until early spring. Those who purchased tickets in advance may receive a refund or may contribute to the Korean War Veterans Memorial Fund by contacting John Barwinczok at 253-6022.
Contributions may be sent to the "Cayuga County KWVA Chapter 296 Memorial Fund," c/o John Barwinczok, 25 Leavenworth Ave., Auburn, NY 13021.
Historian's banquet includes tribute
This year's Historian's Banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Emerson Park. After the banquet, Cayuga County Historian Sheila Tucker will distribute the Millard Fillmore Awards. And at 8:30 p.m., there will be a presentation of an Underground Railroad project by Judith Wellman.
The catered buffet costs $15, and reservations must be made by Friday, Sept. 23, by calling 253-1300. Whether or not one attends the banquet, the general public is encouraged to view the presentation, which details the struggles and successes of abolitionist and anti-slavery residents of Cayuga County.
Public invited to business gathering
In conjunction with the fifth annual Business Trade Show, the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce will host its Business After Five event from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Holiday Inn in Auburn.
The public is welcome to attend to make business contacts and take advantage of networking opportunities. Contact the chamber at 252-7291 to register. Cost is $5.
Council session to address landfill
The Auburn City Council will hold a work session discussion on the future of the city's landfill at its meeting Thursday. Frank DeOrio, director of municipal utilities, said councilors will be presented with current operational costs of the landfill and potential costs for expanding the landfill, in hopes that they will come to "a decision as to whether we move forward to expand the landfill or get out of the landfill business."
The council will meet at 5 p.m. in council chambers at Auburn Memorial City Hall.
Students to hold can and bottle drive
Tyburn Academy students will hold a can and bottle drive on Saturday, Sept. 24, to help raise money for a student trip to New York City in October.
The students will be collecting clean soda and beer cans and bottles at the school located at 50 Wallace Ave., between 9 a.m. and noon.
