Hits and Misses

HIT: To the demolition of the long-closed P&C grocery store on Grant Avenue in Auburn. The building, at the large commercial lot at the corner of North Seward has been an eyesore far too long.
Walgreens expects to break ground on a new store there within two weeks, and the developer of the property is convinced several other ventures will be close behind. Commercial development within the city limits is always a welcomed sight.

MISS: To the loss of Auburn's 1st Battalion 108th Infantry, deactivated in a Sunday ceremony after a presence of more than 100 years.

The 108th traces its history to the Spanish-American war and has had soldiers serving at home and abroad ever since. The silver lining in this cloud is the fact that the local Army National Guard armory will now be home to the 222nd Military Police Company, responsible for escorting convoys, guarding prisoners of war and protecting government buildings.

HIT: The Auburn Doubledays have advanced to the New York-Penn League championship with a two-game sweep of the Oneonta Tigers.

The Doubledays, showing impressive offensive power against Oneonta, winning 17-4 Saturday and 16-5 Sunday, last won the league championship outright in 1973. The team was declared co-champions - along with Oneonta - after severe storms forced cancellation of the championship series in 1998.

HIT: To the volunteers who make the annual TomatoFest possible.

The festival draws thousands to Emerson Park for food and fun, and area food pantries benefit significantly. Ten pantries will share in the thousands of donated canned goods - and the thousands of dollars - the festival sends their way.

Ultimately, local families who need a little help putting nutritious food on the table are the real winners. The 600 volunteers should take great pride in that.
