PORT BYRON - The Cato-Meridian field hockey team rallied from a 1-0 deficit with less than five minutes left to tie Port Byron 1-1 on Wednesday.
Chelsea Gilbert found Hannah Stanistreet for the tying goal on a penalty corner.
"I think that we came out and we really shocked some people," said Blue Devil coach Kim Faust, "which is what our plan was - to come out and really show people it's a new year for Cato-Meridian field hockey."
Port Byron took the lead early in the second half when Megan Nervina scored on an assist from Mallory Jakaub.
Each team had 10 shots on goal, while Port Byron had the edge in penalty corners 10-7. Blue Devil goalie Jen Leach had five saves, while Panther goalie Bethany Cereo had 10.
"I think both teams came out ready to play," said Panther coach Kathy Krempasky. "That was evident right through overtime, both teams really wanted to win. It was a fun competition I thought."
Port Byron (1-0-1) plays in the Camden Tournament this weekend, while Cato-Meridian (0-0-1) travels to Cortland on Friday.
GIRLS TENNIS
Auburn 7, Utica Proctor 0
AUBURN - At first singles, Melissa Coughlin, won 6-3, 6-3 as the Maroons cruised to victory and they didn't drop a single game to the Raiders.
Marren Hunter (6-0, 6-2) and Delaney Scollan (6-1, 6-0) were the other singles winners for Auburn.
In doubles, Lee Kehoe and Emily Mastropietro (6-4, 6-4), Gabe Palmeiri and Maureen Key (6-4, 6-4), Sara Doan and Leanne O'Kussich (6-1, 6-0) and Lauren Ward and Kate Searing (6-1, 7-5) all won for the Maroons.
Auburn (1-1) travels to Henninger on Friday.
BOYS SOCCER
Auburn 2, Fowler 1
AUBURN - Will DeTomaso and Marc Mendillo both found the net for the Maroons, while John Dubovici added an assist.
Matt Plis stopped eight shots in goal, while Mark Evans, Nick Burridge, Mark Netti and Jason Szczepanski played well defensively. Steve Ross and Pat Lavey played well at midfield.
Auburn led 1-0 at halftime.
The Maroons travel to Corcoran on Friday.

AUBURN - Eighth-grader Laura Taylor netted a hat trick as the Maroons easily won.
Nikki Szczepanski added two goals and three assists, Kaylee Petrosino had two goals and one assist, Mandi Lauckern pitched in with one goal and one assist, and Flannery Nangle had one goal and two assists. Abby Gamba passed out one assist.
Ashley Persaile had four saves in goal.
The Maroons led in shots, 21-4, and corner kicks 6-0.
Auburn (3-0) hosts West Genesee on Saturday.
Westhill 3, Skaneteles 2, OT
SYRACUSE - Talia Rooney and Megan Carlberg scored for the Lakers. Claire Gadra added an assist.
Sara Karpen had four saves in goal, while Kara Buehler stopped 12 shots. The Lakers led in shots, 23-17.
Skaneateles (0-1) travels to Oneida on Saturday.
Odessa-Montour 1, Southern Cayuga 0
POPLAR RIDGE - The Olympians scored with 12 minutes left to defeat the Chiefs.
Southern Cayuga led in shots, while Odessa-Montour led in corner kicks, 7-5.
Colleen Lukas and Molly Osterhoudt split time in goal.
Southern Cayuga (0-2) travels to Groton on Friday.
Spencer-Van Etten 3, Union Springs 2
UNION SPRINGS - The Wolves fell to 2-1 after the back-and-forth match-up. Union Springs took a 2-1 lead, but couldn't hold on for the win.
Alex Picciano scored both goals, while Deven Gary had 11 saves.
Dryden 5, Moravia 0
MORAVIA - Kathleen Youngs had 15 saves for the Blue Devils.
The Lions led in shots, 20-4, and corner kicks 17-0.
