BATAVIA - The Batavia Muckdogs snapped the Auburn Doubledays' season-high, nine-game win streak, 8-2, as Auburn's pitching took them out of the game Wednesday.
Doubledays' manager Dennis Holmberg unloaded his bullpen, using six pitchers, but couldn't slow the Muckdogs' bats, as Batavia rolled.
Auburn starter Robert Ray (4-2) struggled, leaving the game in the fourth facing a 4-0 deficit. Ray allowed two first-inning runs and two fourth-inning runs.
The Doubledays' bats weren't much better, amassing only four hits and striking out eight times. The Doubledays went down, in order, six of the nine innings.
The defense put Auburn even further behind in the fifth inning, as a Jacob Butler error allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.
Trailing 6-0, the Doubledays couldn't mount a comeback. Auburn's best opportunity came in the top of the eighth.
Butler walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a Brian Bormaster sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Chris Gutierrez singled and scored on a Marshall Bernhard double that pulled Auburn closer, 6-2.
With a runner on second, Matt Cooksey grounded out to end the inning and the threat.
Auburn also threatened in the ninth. With runners on second and third with one out, Butler and Bormaster both hit pop-ups and were unable to bring any runs to the plate.
On the bright side for the Doubledays, relievers Peter Eberhardt, Edward Rodriguez and Billy Carnline combined to throw 2 1-3 scoreless innings.
Batavia starter, Andrew Barb (3-2) allowed only one Auburn hit in 7 1-3 innings.
After tonight's regular-season finale, Auburn hosts Oneonta Saturday in the first round of the NY-P playoffs.
