Katrina fund-raiser held at D-days

The Auburn Doubledays and the American Red Cross are teaming up to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
A relief fund collection will be taken inside the front gates at tonight's baseball game at Falcon Park to help the Red Cross provide shelter, food, counseling and other services to those in need.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and the game begins at 7 p.m. There will be a fireworks display after the game.

Suspension on gas sales tax urged

Assemblyman Robert Oaks, R-Macedon, joined representatives from the western New York branch of the American Automobile Association Thursday to call for a suspension of the state sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel until the end of the year.

Oaks said New York consumers could save as much as $216 million if the 4-percent levy was suspended between Monday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 31.

Beaver Lake offering early fall paddling

Beaver Lake Nature Center is providing unique opportunities to enjoy the coming of the fall season with Early Autumn Paddles.

Participants will join a naturalist for a leisurely paddle across the waters of Beaver Lake to an isolated point where they will beach their canoes to enjoy the sunset while snacking on cheese, crackers and fresh cider.

Early Autumn Paddles are offered on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18 and 24-25. The price is $8 per canoe. Participants can bring their own canoes or canoe rentals are available for an additional $8. Advance registration is required.

Beaver Lake Nature Center is an Onondaga County Park located four miles west of Baldwinsville. For more information, call 638-2519.

Disaster planning classes to be held

Local agencies are devoting Saturday, Sept. 17, to a day of disaster preparedness in honor of the month of September's designation as National Preparedness Month.

The event includes first-aid classes, an emergency preparedness class and a blood drive. The event will run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fingerlakes Mall. Participants will receive a goody bag and a certificate of attendance. To register, call the Cayuga County chapter of the American Red Cross at 252-9596.

Jordan firefighters awarded grant

The Jordan Fire Department has received a $22,800 federal grant toward operations and safety expenses.

The Department of Homeland Security awarded more than $2 million in grants to 17 New York fire departments during the third round of the 2005 Fire Prevention and Safety awards.

Operations and firefighter safety federal money can be used for training, equipment and personal protective equipment. Other federal money is available for rescue vehicles, ambulances and fire boats.

One-year grants are awarded directly to fire departments. The grants are administered by the Homeland Security's Office for Domestic Preparedness, along with the U.S. Fire Administration.
