Two people were killed in a head-on collision on Route 20 near Beech Road in Sennett Thursday afternoon.
According to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, Doris B. Tucker, 86, of Auburn, and David M. Haley, 24, of Marcellus, died in the accident.
"Both victims were trapped in their vehicles and were pronounced dead at the scene following life-saving attempts by EMS Personnel," said Sheriff Rob Outhouse. Haley and Tucker were alone in their cars and both had been wearing seat belts.
Sennett and Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department workers used pneumatic and hydraulic equipment to extricate the victims.
According to the sheriff's office, a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville operated by Haley was traveling eastbound on Route 20 when it veered into the path of Tucker's 2000 Buick Regal, traveling westbound. Both vehicles spun violently from the impact.
The accident was called into the Cayuga County 911 Center at 3:42 p.m., and a cluster of emergency vehicles soon blocked off a portion of Route 20 near Beech Road.
An emergency helicopter was parked in a nearby field as emergency personnel rushed around the crushed cars, trying to save the lives of the two drivers. At the center of all of the commotion was a white car with its roof ripped off.
The Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Unit used laser equipment to collect information and document evidence at the scene. Deputies and detectives were assisted at the scene by Cayuga County Coroner Robert Kalet as well as Rural Metro, Saves Ambulance and Mercy Flight.
"We interviewed numerous witnesses," Outhouse said. "The investigation remains open, and additional witness interviews will continue as they come forward."
Anyone who has any information should call the sheriff's office at 253-1222 or the Criminal Investigation Unit directly at 253-1610.
