Syracuse race to honor Trowse
The Syracuse Festival of Races has announced the creation of the John Trowse Memorial Award, which will be presented annually to the top Central New York finisher in the Men's 5K at the Festival.

The 13th annual edition of the event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2, starting and finishing outside Syracuse University#'s Manley Field House.

The $250 cash award is named in honor of John Trowse.

As an additional way of supporting local athletes, the Festival of Races is introducing a new "Race of Champions" format for 2005.

With the new entry format, the overall male and female winners in any 2005 CNY road race having 250 or more finishers are being offered complimentary entry for either the Men#'s 5K or the Ameriprise Financial Women#,s 5K at the Festival.

Qualifying athletes can request a complimentary entry by e-mailing his or her winning performance and mailing address to FestivalofRaces@a-znet.com.

Races to be held at Emerson Park

The second annual Mason and Grant Labor Day Classic 5K and 10K will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 5 at Emerson Park. The cost is $10.

There will be age-group awards and course record awards.

There will also be a 1-mile fun run. Registrations are available at Mason and Grant, located at 17 Logan St. Registration will also be available from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on race day at Emerson Park.

Applications are also available at the Auburn YMCA.Refreshments and baby-sitting services will be provided.

Participants will also receive T-shirts.

Senior Doubledays bury Swampers

Snappers Senior Doubledays defeated the Swampers 16-2 as Joe Wiseman pitched a three-hitter for Snappers.

The offense was led by Scott Payne and Marty Black, who had three hits apiece. Greg Di Cola, Steve Komanecky, Eric Short, and Mike Dolan added two hits each .

It was Snappers' 11th win in their last 13 games, raising their record to 11- 6.

Swim Owasco on Labor Day

The third annual Swim Owasco will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 5 at Camp Rotary on the east side of Owasco Lake.

Swimmers are pre-assigned to boats and allowed up to two hours to make the crossing.

The entry fee is $10 and includes a t-shirt as well as breakfast after the swim at Casowasco.

Entry forms are available at Emerson Park, the YMCA, The Citizen and the Cascade Grill.

In Moravia, entry forms are available at Modern Market, Granny's Gas Station and New Creations Hair Salon.

There will be no registering on the beach this year and the deadline for entries is Thursday, Sept. 1.

Fall programs at Champions for Life

The Champions for Life Sports Center is accepting registrations for the fall programs in gymnastics, cheerleading and tumbling, homeschool fitness program, karate, indoor tennis and indoor soccer.

There will be an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.
