FAIR HAVEN - The quaint lakeside village of Fair Haven has much more to offer than picturesque views, boating, fishing, swimming, dining, and shopping.
This community, near the shore of Lake Ontario with the small town feel, has a large population of gifted artists.
A comfortable breeze and sunny sky welcomed nearly a dozen artists who set up shop under open tents along with food vendors in the village park Sunday for the first "Art in the Park" art show.
Watercolor artist Carol Burghart of Sterling had several visitors around lunchtime who perused her display of paintings and note cards, each depicting familiar local points of interest.
"We have had at least 75 people through the park today so far," she said.
Burghart gets together once a week with a few artists to paint.
As time went on, they began to discover there were other local artists out there as well.
"We found more and more people with wonderful talents," Burghart said. "At one time there was an art gallery on Main Street but it closed so we would set up in other places and decided to try this."
Patricia Cooper-Pratt of Fair Haven, an artist and one of the event organizers, hopes to make this an annual show for the local artisans.
The artists each exhibited their own uniqueness but, at the same time, the overall subject matter was strikingly similar: Many used the rich natural beauty of the land, water and wildlife for inspiration.
In addition to watercolors, there were photographs, stained glass, baskets, quilts, and gift and holiday items.
There was also a hand-crafted assortment of woodwork by Toby Gateley of North Wolcott. Each piece was made from locally grown wood. The pieces included wall decor, walking sticks, coffee tables, and games, like the intricate marble toy that reached about a foot in height and took many hours to complete according to Gateley.
While these artists are gearing up for another show in the park next summer, they are also planning an event this October in Sterling.
"We expect a lot more artists to participate in addition to those who are here today," said Cooper-Pratt.
