Scherrer is four strokes back
Skaneateles native Tom Scherrer is four strokes off the lead after the first round of the Nationwide Tour's Xerox Classic at Irondequoit Country Club on Thursday.

Scherrer shot a 2-under-par 68 and is tied with 15 other golfers.

Bubba Dickerson, at 6-under, is the first-round leader.

Scherrer is 21st on the Nationwide Tour's money list with $130,020.

Auburn Firefighters defeat SK Post

Bob Buckley had a pair of doubles and four RBIs as the Auburn Firefighters beat the SK Post 16-9 in the first game of the Auburn Babe Ruth championship series.

Noah Donch tripled, doubled and also had four RBIs for the Firefighters. Matt Clancy added a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBIs and Bill Scala had a single, double and two RBIs.

Starter Mike Assmann struck out 11 and Buckley finished.

For the SK Post, Tyler Garafalo doubled as part of three hits, Tom Trowell and Justin Gillmore (double) each had two hits.

Swim Owasco on Labor Day

The third annual Swim Owasco will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 5 at Camp Rotary on the east side of Owasco Lake.

Swimmers are pre-assigned to boats and allowed up to two hours to make the crossing.

The entry fee is $10 and includes a t-shirt as well as breakfast after the swim at Casowasco.

Entry forms are available at Emerson Park, the YMCA, The Citizen and the Cascade Grill. In Moravia, entry forms are available at Modern Market, Granny's Gas Station and New Creations Hair Salon.

There will be no registering on the beach this year and the deadline for entries is Thursday, Sept. 1.

Fall programs at Champions for Life

The Champions for Life Sports Center is accepting registrations for the fall programs in gymnastics, cheerleading and tumbling, homeschool fitness program, karate, indoor tennis and indoor soccer.

There will be an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Auburn softball

car wash is Saturday

The Auburn girls softball program will be holding a car wash from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Wal-Mart.

The car wash was originally scheduled for this past Saturday but was cancelled due to the Auburn water crisis.

The donation is $5 per car.

Auburn modified football signups

Auburn modified and freshman football signups will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 24 and 25 behind Seward Elementary School.

Moravia soccer camp next week

The Moravia Youth Soccer League will be sponsoring a soccer camp from Aug. 22 to 26 at the Filmore Glen State Park for children ages 4 to 15.
