MISS: Just when we thought water problems were over ...
The Seneca Lake State Park's "sprayground" is now closed for the season after a massive outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among people who played there. Some 750 cases of the illness are known, and that includes 56 people who live in Cayuga County who had visited the water park in Geneva.
The state made the right move to shut down the park, but we hope health officials can figure out what went wrong.
MISS: Seventeen-year-old Bradley Laning has pleaded guilty to murdering his girlfriend of the same age, Andrea Kell, in the woods at Cayuga Community College earlier this year.
Ultimately, Laning's defense couldn't find a way to get around the fact that the defendant brought a kitchen knife to the nature trail where he killed Kell.
Thankfully, however, Laning's plea in court Thursday prevents what could have been an extremely difficult, emotional trial for all the families involved to endure.
HIT: The Young Ambassadors Brass Band of Great Britain delivered spectacular performances in Weedsport and Skaneateles this week.
The group, which has been touring throughout the United States and Canada, provided a wonderful cultural gift for the community. And it didn't hurt that they performed on Wednesday and Thursday, two of the nicest days of the summer.
HIT: The Cato-Meridian Central School District has reached a significant milestone in its effort to turn around a financial mess uncovered in 2003.
Standard and Poor's Ratings Services has assigned an "A" rating for the district, which will help it secure lower interest rates when it borrows money in the future. The district has been working to trim a deficit that had reached $720,669 in 2003. Superintendent Deborah Bobo, the district's business office and the board of education all deserve credit for coming this far, and we urge them to continue keeping spending controls tight and debt manageable.
