Physician joins AMH family practice
A new physician is joining Auburn Memorial Hospital's medical staff in family practice.
Dr. Cassandra Archer is currently in practice with the Auburn Internal Medicine and Pediatrics group with Drs. Joseph Graney and Mark McSwain.
Archer earned her medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. She completed a residency in Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Del., and A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del.
Fire departments receive federal grant
The Moravia Joint Fire District and the Southern Cayuga Instant Aid Inc. were awarded federal firefighter grants this week.
Moravia received $52,526 for operations and safety expenses. Southern Cayuga received $111,150 for a new vehicle.
A total of $650 million was appropriated by the U.S. Congress for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to provide one-year grants to fire departments to supplement their budgets.
Hazard Library to conclude book sale
Hazard Library is concluding its annual sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, at the Poplar Ridge Firehouse on Route 34B in Poplar Ridge. The event will also offer a bake sale to benefit Southern Springs Fast Pitch Softball team.
Hazard Library is celebrating its 110th year of being chartered by the state of New York. At the book sale, the library has been serving cake and giving a free pencil to everyone interested.
In 1884, William R. Hazard opened a reading room with his personal collection of books for the community to read. Hazard Library has been operating in the same room since then.
National Guard seeking marchers
The National Guard is looking for active and non-active members to march in a parade on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The parade will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Auburn City Hall and continue to the South Street Armory. To sign up for the parade, call 253-3631.
Defensive driving courses to be held
Two standalone six-hour defensive driving courses will be held 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 24. The courses will be held at the Cooperative Extension at 248 Grant Ave., Auburn.
A two-part six-hour defensive driving course will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13 and Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Building C, South Street Road, Auburn.
People who complete the course are eligible for a reduction of as many as four points on their New York driving record and can receive a 10 percent decrease on collision and liability premiums.
The course is $40 at the door or $35 with pre-registration.

Farmers' Market appreciation held
The Skaneateles Community Center will host Farmers' Market Appreciation Day from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. There will be market vendors, educational displays and discussions on water quality issues, alternative energy production and vineyards.
