Many hands serve needs of community

There's always a lot happening at St. Luke's United Church of Christ on Seminary Avenue in Auburn. Have you ever noticed the sign out in front of their church? It has a different inspirational message each week and is a great little reminder for all of us as we hurry past with our busy lives.
The annual Strawberry Festival and Yard Sale was held on July 16, and was a great success. The yard sale was very popular and many people found things that they needed at a good price. St. Luke's would like to thank everyone who came and purchased from them. They also sold lots of great food including strawberries with biscuits and ice cream, hot dogs, macaroni salad, lemonade, iced tea and coffee. They raised more than $1,800, some of which will be used for Christian education, and the rest will go toward the regular church budget. Special thanks to chairpersons Joyce Fohs, Arline Clair, Nancy Griffith and Donald Clark, as well as everyone who pitched in and worked so hard on this event.

St. Luke's also has a ministry coordinated by Ski Bobbett, which provides help with the nutrition program at the Boyle Center every weekday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They provide help for the disabled, set-up tables and serve coffee. Also at St. Luke's, they collect food for the Salvation Army. Special thanks go to Fran Thomas and Betty Weiman for delivering the food. They also donate pet food for those that have trouble paying for food for their pets. Special thanks to Judy Kilborne who makes these deliveries. In addition, they collect pennies for World Missions, which I think is a terrific idea. There always seems to be an overabundance of pennies and this is a great way to put them to use. Their goal is to reach $500 each year for the Missions.

The Women's Guild at St. Luke's is collecting items for the Matthew House wish list. For anyone who may not know, Matthew House is a two-bedroom home on the south side of Auburn for people with terminal illness who can no longer stay at home, but do not require hospitalization.

We are so thankful to have Matthew House here in Auburn. The service they provide to our families when we most need it is invaluable.

I could not tell you about St. Luke's without remembering my aunt, Beverly Wolniak, and how much she enjoyed her friends at St. Luke's and volunteering there. She was a wonderful lady with a contagious laugh and tremendous faith. Also, when I think of St. Luke's, I think of their awesome sauerkraut and pork supper every autumn - something we can all look forward to when the weather cools down. Here's to St. Luke's, for all the good things they do to help make Auburn a better place to live for everyone.

I need to apologize, there was a mistake in the article of July 15 regarding the soup kitchen.

Mary Ann Ginnerty, who is in charge of the SS. Peter and John soup kitchen, was kind enough to let me know that she does not pick up the donations from the grocery stores herself, and she would like to give credit where it is due.

The Community Caring Center located on Wall Street has volunteers who make pick-ups daily at all the local grocery stores. The SS. Peter and John soup kitchen is just one of the many programs that benefit from their constant efforts. Special thanks to these volunteers, without whom, many local ministries would not be able to provide the services that they do.

God loves you! Have a great week and send me your good news.

"When you look at the inner workings of electrical things, you see wires. Until the current passes through them, there will be no light. That wire is you and me. The current is God. We have the power to let the current pass through us, use us, to produce the light of the world, Jesus, in us. Or we can refuse to be used and allow darkness to spread." - Mother Teresa
