Hits and Misses

HIT: The federal government's decision to make former Nellson Nutraceutical workers in Ira eligible for added job search and relocation assistance represents a small dose of good news in an otherwise regrettable situation.
The Ira plant shut down earlier this year, leaving dozens of workers - many of them long-time employees - without a job.

The Trade Adjustment Assistance for which workers may now apply should help ease the pain a little.

MISS: By the very nature of what they do, doctors have to be highly ethical and trustworthy, so the state's disciplinary action against a local obstetrician and gynecologist is disturbing.

The state Department of Health has placed Dr. Ayodeji Lukula on a three-year probation in connection with a number of charges that he practiced negligently. Among the most disturbing charges, which the doctor did not contest, was that he rushed a patient into surgery without exploring other treatment options. He is also accused of falsifying records on multiple occasions.

HIT: The opening of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse this week marks a significant milestone in the theater's development.

Such a large show usually only comes to bigger cities, but the expansion and improvements at the playhouse on Owasco Lake have allowed the Merry-Go-Round to think big. The play's run offers local residents a wonderful family entertainment opportunity, and it also should bring plenty of out-of-towners to the area.

HIT: The annual Empire Farm Days celebration in Seneca Falls once again proved to be a terrific showcase for this region's agricultural industry.

The three-day event brought thousands of people to this area to learn about the latest technology and research in farming.
