Ah, August - the time for hot sun, summer concerts and political planning and fund-raising.
Future women
With all the talk over the years about getting more women into politics and running for office, this year's pickings are slim locally.
Only one woman is on a major party line, Republican Linda Murphy for the county Legislature. She is running against incumbent William Catto in the 11th District. But despite the lack of women on the ballot this November, at least one party isn't giving up.
The Cayuga County Democratic Committee women's group, which sponsored a very successful event in Aurora last summer with former Wells president and Texas legislator Frances "Sissy" Farenthold, is holding a quasi-campaign recruitment event, "Women on the Move," later this month.
They have recruited Amy Dacey, an Auburnian who is the national political director of Sen. John Kerry's political action committee "Keeping America's Promise," to come back home to talk about getting women involved in running for office.
Dacey's resume is chock full of experience, including heading Rochester congresswoman Louise Slaughter's victorious re-election race in 1998, creating the state legislative program at EMILY's List that recruits and funds women to run for state office, and acting as Sen. Kerry's traveling political director last year. She may be the catalyst the Democrats need to get women to put their names forward.
The recruitment event is being held at the Springside Inn on Monday, Aug. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The cost of the event, which includes appetizers and a local wine selection, is $20.

The race for money
Two candidates the GOP is putting a lot of faith in know that a critical weapon in their races this fall will be the amount of money they will have to spend. James Orman, who is challenging incumbent treasurer David Farrell, is holding his first fund-raiser from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 at the Springside Inn.
The $50 tickets can be paid for by mailing a check to "Orman for Treasurer" at P.O. Box 174, Aurora, NY 13026.
City council candidate Matthew Smith is kicking off his campaign on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the S & K Post on State Street with a $10 per ticket hot dog roast from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the event or reserved by calling 252-8489.
