HIT: The city of Auburn's Tuesday evening music and movie program is truly a summertime treasure.
This past week, Bob Piorun and friends provided the musical entertainment, and a screening of "Shrek 2" followed. The scene, which takes place every Tuesday at a city park, is family recreation at its best. Children are enjoying the outdoors in a while their parents, grandparents and other relatives enjoy terrific local music and a movie.
It's free, and it's available every week. Kudos to Mike Talbot, the city's recreation director, and sponsor M&T Bank.
MISS: It's the bridge no one wants.
We urge officials in the village of Port Byron, the town of Mentz and Cayuga County to strike a deal over how to get the Mill Street bridge fixed. At this point, all three entities have deflected responsibility for the bridge, which sustained severe damage in the early April storms.
Three homeowners use the bridge to get into the village - so it's not a major public thoroughfare - but those people deserve services such as road and bridge repair just as much as anyone else.
HIT: Carpenter's Falls in the town of Niles will remain open to the public.
The Finger Lakes Land Trust has purchased a portion of the land at the falls from a private owner. It was the latest of several purchases the land trust has made in the region in order to keep lands accessible. Changing times have been forcing private landowners - concerned about liability - to restrict access to certain areas of pristine natural beauty.
HIT: By simply updating the buses and the routes, CENTRO's ridership in Auburn is on the upswing. The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority this week reported a 45-percent increase in the use of the bus system here in June, compared with the same month a year earlier, a major increase.
The bus system has improved wheelchair accessibility, upgraded air conditioning systems and simplified bus routes.
A healthy public transportation system is an important base for a vibrant local economy.
