Local athletes earn state honors
Several local baseball and softball athletes received all-state honors from the New York State Sports Writers Association.
In baseball, pitcher Dan Bennett and short stop Andrew Grutka, both of Skaneateles, were elected to the second and third teams in Class B, respectively. In Class C, pitcher Cory Langtry (Moravia) received third-team honors.
Jordan-Elbridge pitcher Colleen Ryan made the cut in Class B for the Eagles for softball. Ryan is a second-team selection.
SU basketball names opponents
The Syracuse men's basketball team will play home-and-home series against Cincinnati, Connecticut and Villanova and host new BIG EAST members Louisville and South Florida in the Carrier Dome in 2005-06.
Dates and times for these games are expected to be announced in September.
In addition, the Orange will host Rutgers, Seton Hall and West Virginia this season.
Syracuse's road slate includes games at DePaul, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and St. John's. Syracuse will not face Marquette or Providence this season.
Frozen Ocean to host Yamaha race
The Yamaha Night of Champions will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Frozen Ocean Motocross.
Practice begins at 5:30 p.m.
Girls' lax league to start next week
A new girls' lacrosse league will be running Sunday nights, beginning July 17. The league is free and open to the public.
Girls ages 6 to 11 will be meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. Girls between the ages of 12 and 17 will meet from 6 to 7 p.m.
Games will be held behind the agricultural museum, where Cayuga Community College plays its games.

Last chance to sign up for Pop Warner
The final registration session for Auburn Indians Pop Warner will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 at the YMCA.
Signups for football and cheerleading are available for children between the ages of 5 and 15.
Parents must be present to sign the registration and bring a copy of their child's birth certificate.
The fee is $70 per child and $45 for the Flag Division. Registration is open to Cayuga County residents.

FLMSL annual meeting on July 17
The Finger Lakes Minor Soccer League's annual general meeting is 5 p.m. July 17 at the Holiday Inn.
There is no cost, and parents are encouraged to attend.
CLNB Aurora Run this Saturday
The Cayuga Lake National Bank is sponsoring the Aurora Run 2.5 and one mile runs at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 9.
Aurora Run 2005 will start in downtown Aurora and follow its traditional course through town and the Wells College campus.
Race applications are available at the Cayuga Lake National Bank, Cream at the Top and the Auburn YMCA.
Pre-registration will be $7 and day-of-race registration will be $10.
