CATO - The Cato-Meridian school board will be taking a crash course in auditing at its July 26 board meeting.
At the reorganization meeting held Wednesday night, the board abolished the internal auditor position, currently held by Donna Traister for a stipend of $2,000. The payment of all school bills will now be the collective responsibility of the school board.

Board member Charles Ware said the position of internal auditor is scheduled to be redefined in December and filled in 2006.

"The new position will have much higher qualifications," Ware said. "This will help smooth out the process a little."

The board's finance committee will now be reviewing all bills and bringing its recommendations to the board to be voted on in public sessions.

Ware plans to inform Traister the position has been abolished, and at the next meeting the board will be learning how to get the bills and the steps to take to ensure they are paid in a timely manner.

"We are going to have to look at the position and what it includes anyway," said Heidi Dennison ,who was sworn onto the board prior to the meeting. "If we do it ourselves we will have a better idea of what the job entails."

In other news:

- Board member Kathleen Bratt was sworn in as the new board president. Bratt has served on the board since 2002. She was the board's vice president after board president Robert Vogel resigned in January, causing several seats to shift.

Charles Ware will be serving as the board's 2005-06 vice president. Ware came onto the board in 2004.

- Janice Lee was appointed district clerk at a stipend of $2,450. Lee, Superintendent Deborah Bobo's administrative assistant, was also appointed to the position last year but for a higher stipend.

Bobo said the district was unable to give Lee a raise for her regular job due to 2004's contingency budget. This year's budget was passed, so the stipend was returned to its original rate.

- The board also set its meeting schedule for 2005-06 and after the July 26 meeting, all meetings will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. The meetings will still be conducted in the middle school cafeteria at 7 p.m.
