A good old time

Have you ever wondered what life was like before the modern conveniences of computers and video games? Before motorized cars, microwave ovens, the grocery store and the mall?
On Saturday, the Ward O#'Hara Agricultural Museum will offer the chance to relive the old days at its annual Old Ways Days event.

The event will offer a look at what life was like when the only means of transportation was horse-drawn wagons or the first 1927 Model T Ford. Rides in both will be available.

Foods will be cooked the old-fashioned way - in cast iron pots - and butter will be churned by hand.

Visitors will also see blacksmith demonstrations and the old way of spinning and weaving fabrics.

The Finger Lakes Antique Power Club will bring its tractor exhibit and area farmers will have farm animals for petting.

Children's games played before the days of video games will be showcased, and children can join in on the lawn.

The daylong event will also feature the annual Dairy Princess Ceremony, with the crowning of the princess, and traditional folk singers, Jaqui McCarthy and Karl Paisley will entertain.

As a part of its 10th anniversary, Cayuga County Office of Tourism will be taking part in the Old Ways Days event with an exhibit of its own.

"There are so many attractions right here in Cayuga County that people take for granted," said Meg Vanek, executive director of Cayuga County Office of Tourism. "They are right here in our own backyard."

In April, the Office of Tourism kicked off its "Be a Tourist in Your Own Backyard" program to encourage local residents to discover the great things that Cayuga County has to offer.

The exhibit will feature local attractions and a free button.

"Each month, throughout the summer we will pick a different event in the county to partner with," Vanek said. "Cayuga County is truly a beautiful place. We want to encourage people to get out and about and enjoy all of the beauty that lies right in their own backyard."
