The Cayuga County Babe Ruth baseball league will hold its final meeting before the season-openers at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2 at Wayne's Computer on Route 5.
All coaches are required to turn in their rosters at this meeting.
Four Maroons are first-team all-league
Four Auburn High boys lacrosse players made first-team all-league, midfielders Ryan Lewis and Jack Redmond, defenseman Pat Hovey and goalie Frank DiMora.
Making second team were attack Brian Hoey, defensemen Andy Kott and Carl Festa and long-stick middie John Mauro.
Attack Matt Malenick, midfielders Joe Taylor and Matt Chadderdon were named honorable mention.
Former Maroon Downing honored
Fairfield University men's lacrosse player Greg Downing (Auburn) was named to the 2005 Men's Lacrosse Division I STX/Geico all-American honorable mention Team.
He is the first Stag to receive the postseason honor since C.J. Kemp received the same accolade in 2002.
Downing, the Great Western Lacrosse League's Offensive Player of the Year, led the Stags in every offensive category and was first in the GWLL in points (46), second in goals (32), and fourth in assists (14). Downing's 32 goals this season ties him for eighth all-time in Fairfield history for single-season goals and his 55 career goals ties him for 10th all-time.
"I'm extremely proud of Greg," said head coach Ted Spencer. "It's a testament to his hard work and ability. It's a well deserved honor and it's great for him and the program."
The sophomore midfielder helped the Stags to a GWLL Co-Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament en-route to one of the best seasons in school history. The team finished 2005 with a national ranking of 15, the highest in program history, and a school record-tying 11-5 overall record. In addition, Fairfield's .688 winning percentage was the seventh-best in the country.
Lakers' Riehlman is honorable mention
The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced the Division III Men's Lacrosse all-Americans.
SUNY Geneseo junior middie Pat Riehlman (Skaneateles), sophomore middie Owahn Bazydlo (Corcoran) and freshman Kevin Hennigan (West Genesee) each earned honorable mention.
This is Riehlman's second all-American honor.
Gruel takes first at Oswego Speedway
Supermodified driver David Gruel (Auburn) took the honors in Sunday's Community Bank, PBS & Furdi's Memorial Day 50-lap special event at Oswego Speedway.
Gruel charged to the front from his 18th starting spot and took the lead on the 39th lap. On Saturday, Gruel was second in another race.
"It was awesome," Gruel said. "I went from 18th to second yesterday. I didn't think I could do much better than that. I proved myself wrong today, going 18th to first."
