Area buildings ravaged by fires taint community

How long does it take to clean up and rebuild after a fire?
Too long.

While the physical damage caused by a fire may be cleared out within days, the scars of two local business fires remain ... months later.

Drivers on Grant Avenue can't help but notice that the neon barrels and the closed sign on Wendy's billboard are still out.

The fire that started in the fast food restaurant in February was put down within hours, but the fire behind the scenes burned a lot longer.

The Auburn Fire Department determined the fire was caused by an accidental electrical short-out of cables installed by Kay-R electricians.

Kay-R disagreed and was awaiting the results of an insurance investigation, which has held up the store's re-opening.

In Skaneateles, everyone is reminded of the January 2004 fire that destroyed a 120-year-old downtown building. A gaping hole, bordered by a chain-link fence, still stains this quaint village.

The building, which had housed Country Cabin Gifts, was set ablaze when a welder ignited insulation while heating frozen pipes.

Building owner Terri Bocklet has plans to rebuild in the location, but there were a number of concerns that needed to be ironed out between Bocklet and the village.

It will be the second summer in which the town's barrage of weekend tourists walk by what looks to be an archeological dig between Riddler's Newsstand and Doug's Fish Fry.

For a town that prides itself on being quaint, clean and attractive, this is a major eyesore and no doubt a frustratingly long process for many.

Just as we welcomed in the summer with a beautiful Memorial Day weekend, it's disappointing to note that we continue to have to endure the stark, physical reminders of two of this area's biggest fires.
