OWASCO - Sunny, blue skies were an apt backdrop to bring in summer.
The Owasco Fire Department welcomed in the season last weekend at Emerson Park.

The department's annual dance and cookout has been one of its major fund-raisers since 1988. This year, they raised money for the purchase of a Jaws of Life extraction tool and a new rescue truck.

"The Jaws of Life we have are 20 years old, so we'll be able to update our old equipment," said Jerry VeVone, a firefighter and organizer of the event. "The new Jaws are stronger and lighter."

Owasco volunteer firefighters performed most of the support services for the large public event with a friendly and very visible presence. Most wore blue T-shirts on and wore ID badges.

Joe Head hoped they would be able to buy the new equipment.

"We applied for some grant money," he said, "so we're hoping to get that, too. I've been a firefighter since 1980. My son is 17 and he can't wait to join next year."

The Blues Family, a loud, high-energy rhythm and blues band, filled the pavilion with their music. The headline act was Nik and the Niceguys, who call themselves "America's No. 1 party band."

The fire department has been in operation since 1926.

Volunteer firefighters serve out of two stations (Owasco Road, and Twelve Corners Road) to protect more than 37 square miles of territory, and a population of more than 3,200 people.

The department owns two ambulances, three engines, one tanker/pumper, one fire boat and one rescue boat.

In 2004, the department logged 347 calls, including 201 for emergency medical services and 37 for rescue or extrication.

Jeff Dugan came out to hear some music and meet some friends at the lake.

"This is a good way to start the summer," he said.
