CICERO - Three more local athletes are heading to next week's state track and field meet in Cicero after the Section III boys state qualifier Friday.
Reid Silverman / The Citizen Jordan-Elbridge runner Paul Barbaglia, right, outruns Sauquoit Valley's Steve Steedman as Barbaglia took fourth place in Division II in the 3000-meter steeplechase during the Section III, boys state-meet qualifier at Cicero- North Syracuse Friday.
Steve Corsello (800 meters), Tyler Nichols (pole vault) and Nick VanWie (triple jump) will compete in their respective events June 3 and 4.

Skaneateles senior Corsello won by the greatest margins for local athletes, trouncing the competition in the 800 in a time of 1:56.41.

Corsello's time would've been even quicker if it wasn't for Tully's Greg Hartnett, who led early before fading quickly. Corsello made his move around the 200-meter mark and 300 meters in, the race was essentially over.

"The guy in front of me started going way out, started slowing down and I had to go around him," Corsello said. "It's something that I didn't anticipate (Hartnett) doing, because it was completely unnecessary. That cost me two seconds in the first half and then I didn't recover."

"Somebody from another school went out like a bandit," said Skaneateles coach Jack Reed. "I think Steve knew that he was in way over his head, but backed off his own pace a little too much instead of moderately backing off.

"He still finished faster than he ran last year at the state meet."

Corsello is hoping to improve next week.

"I'm very disappointed with my time, but I'll get another chance next week," Corsello said.

Corsello's teammate Tyler Nichols won without incident in the pole vault after failing to qualify in 2004 because his pole broke. Nichols was one of the last vaulters in Division I and II, and finished with a 12-6. Central Square's Travis Britt topped both divisions with a vault of 13-10.

"I actually think I can do a lot better than I'm doing this year," Nichols said. "Last year, I got on a pole that was really stiff, hard to bend, so it forced me to go up as far as I could. Now my plant is getting a lot better so the pole is bending a lot easier. Unfortunately that means that I'm going farther back than I am up. It makes it safer, but I don't really care about that."

Reed made himself scarce when he saw that Nichols was vaulting successfully.

"Tyler is jumping well so I'm not going anywhere near him," Reed joked.

Weedsport's VanWie beat both Division I and II competitors in the triple jump with an effort of 43-4 1/2. VanWie knows he'll have to adjust to the higher-quality field athletes at the state meet.

"It's a lot of competition - a lot more than I'm used to," he said.

VanWie also finished third in the Division II high jump with a jump of 5-10.

Auburn's Division I 400 entrants, juniors Dion Brown (53.26) and Shilah Richardson (53.46) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

"I was just trying my best, trying to get first or second so I could go to states, but it didn't happen," Brown said. "It was pretty tough the last 100 meters."

"I was hoping to get down to 50 second but that didn't happen today," Richardson said, "but it's all right."

Weedsport's Josh Galletta was third in the Division II long jump (20-3 1/2).

"It's not a personal best," Galletta said. "Every day I just come out and jump, and don't worry about anything else. I just get in the zone as they say, and go out and try my best."

Galletta also teamed with Kerry Green, John Mietz and Jeff Williams to finish fifth in the Division II 400 relay (45.88).

"We were pretty close to the school record, we wanted to get that," Green said. "We were only about a half-second off. We ran our best time, but we didn't get it."

In other events, Laker Dan Kelly finished third in the Division II 400 hurdles (57.97) and seventh in the 110 hurdles (15.94) and teammate Josey Witter was fourth in the high jump (5-10). Warrior Jerry Ripley was third in the Division II pole vault (11-6) and Mark Baker was ninth (10-6).

Jordan-Elbridge's Paul Barbaglia was fourth in the Division II 3000 steeplechase (10:51.64), and fellow Eagle Andy DeGray was seventh overall in the pentathlon (2585 points).
