Seven reasons to play golf

You are out in the fresh air and sunshine. Even on cloudy days, playing golf is better than staying indoors.
So the weather might be a little cool in April and May, that's why they make sweaters and Gore-Tex jackets.

What is more invigorating: a few lungs full of fresh air on a bright crisp morning, or a breath or air from your furnace or heating system?

There's something about the personal satisfaction of knowing you have done something well, or done something to give yourself a little boost on your journey to where you are going. I don't know anyone, who if they were to really tell the truth, would not tell you they want to play better golf, no matter what the skill level.

Get out and play for fun or recreation, or whatever reason, but get out and play. Having fun doing something does not mean that you can't strive to do it better. Remember the old saying, "that last good shot is the one that keeps you coming back."

You meet good people and make new friends. What can be better than that? Anytime you extend your personal frame of reference you have made a stride forward and taken a trip into the unknown. Sounds like a fun time to me.

Golf relieves stress and frustration. Whenever you go out and give it your all, you cannot help but feel better, relaxed, and maybe a little tired.

This is almost as good as making a new friend on the golf course. No matter how you played, if you gave it all you had, you are bound to feel better.

The smell of fresh cut grass, get to the course early, and let the smells of spring and summer get inside of you. It is one of the greatest pleasures in the game.

We all tend to think of golf as playing and the swing, and take the game on a much too personal level.

The little things that are parts of golf are just as important as the actual playing of the game.

Properly-conditioned turf is just as important as hitting your 7 iron 150 yards, and if you stop to think about it, probably has as much to do with a good shot as your swing.

Doing something the right way, playing by the rules, I mean.

On the golf course, there are no red lights or stop signs to run through. You can't take shortcuts.

You get in line and play your shot. You are at the mercy of your own resources.

There's a certain satisfaction in knowing you played a round according to the rules the way they were written, that you didn't cheat, fabricate, beg, borrow or steal.

Doing something in accordance with guidelines and, yes, rules, takes a certain amount of discipline and self-control. What's that?

The thrill of a good shot: you try and try and try and nothing seems to go your way. Then all of a sudden, you catch it on the sweet spot and the ball soars straight, high, and right toward the flagstick.

Man, is that a kick. All this and more.

What a great game!
