The state Thruway Authority and State Police Troop T began additional seat belt enforcement on the Thruway Monday, which will run through Sunday, June 5.
Along with law enforcement across the state, Troop T troopers will staff safety restraint checkpoints and patrol the 641-mile highway.
Drivers and front-seat passengers 16 years of age and older may face a fine up to $50 for failing to buckle up. Drivers who fail to have children properly secured may face a fine of as much as $100 and receive three points on their license.
Regardless of age, all front-seat occupants must be properly secured; all rear-seat passengers under 16 years old must be properly secured.
Children under the age of 4 must be restrained in a federally-approved child safety seat; children of that age who weigh more than 40 pounds, may be secured in a booster seat with a lap/shoulder safety belt.
Children 4 to 6 years old must be restrained in an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat unless they are more than 4 feet 9 inches tall.
Board to discuss capital project
The Auburn board of education will be meeting tonight to review capital project updates and the district's new Web site.
The board will also be discussing its number of members and if any changes should be made.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library.
Familiarization tour for operators
Forty two representatives from tour companies and the state Division of Tourism will be escorted Wednesday, June 1 to Friday, June 3 on a tour to promote Cayuga County and Skaneateles as a destination for tour groups.
The Big Grape tour - a takeoff on the well-known Big Apple tours offered in New York City - will begin with shopping and a lake cruise put on by Mid-Lakes Navigation in Skaneateles, followed by dinner at the Sherwood Inn.
On Thursday, the group will have breakfast at the Ward O'Hara Agricultural Museum, followed by a tour of MacKenzie-Childs, Ltd. and a wine tasting at the King Ferry Winery.
They will lunch at Aurora Inn and then tour the Seward House and the Willard Memorial Chapel.
The group will have dinner at the Springside Inn, followed by a performance of "Brigadoon" at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse.
The "familiarization"tour for tour operators and their guests was organized by the Cayuga County Office of Tourism, the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The products and services are offered complimentary to the operators.
Fourth-graders finishing study
Moravia fourth-graders will be wrapping up their year-long study of the area's history with a reception at the Powers Library.
Students have been participating in a Millard Fillmore enrichment program, and the young artists have conducted research, written two musicals, created their own DVD and personal books based on interviews.
Students from Chris Rice's class will be dressed in clothing that is representative of Moravia's early days at the turn of the century, as they make final presentation of all their work.
The presentation will begin in the library at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
