Vandals caused minor damage to the inside of the middle and high school building at Southern Cayuga Central School sometime over the weekend.
Cayuga County Sheriff Rob Outhouse said an unauthorized entry leaving "general ransacking" and graffiti painting probably took place Sunday.
There was no obvious point of entry for the vandals, Southern Cayuga district superintendent Peter Cardamone said.
"We're not happy they were in the building, but it's not like they broke a window or something like that. There may have just been an opportunity with kids hanging around where they found or saw a door open. It's hard to see if it was premeditated," Cardamone said.
The security code for staff access to the building outside of regular school hours was changed Monday for security purposes following the break-in, Cardamone said.
The vandals opened an estimated half-dozen lockers that did not have locks and dumped the contents on the floor. Graffiti was discovered in one area and a pay phone was damaged, but no students reported anything important missing, Cardamone said.
The break-in was discovered by school employees Monday morning, Outhouse said.
The district delayed starting the school day Monday to allow the district's school resource officer and other Sheriff's office officials to investigate, Cardamone said.
